Nature/Nurture

I’ve never seen you look like that

Hair scraped back

Eyes leaving more to be desired

I look tired, apparently

Though I got 8 hours’ sleep

And I’ve been using these serums

To improve the appearance

Of wrinkles

Or laughter lines so I look worn in

Like an old boot

And to boot, I must look natural

But not too factual

Because that’s not appealng

But see looks are deceiving

So I paint my canvas

For years on end

Pretending to be confident

Feigning nonchalence

Must look as easy

As can be

But really

I’m only fooling me

Anxiety

As the sun rises

Full of surprises

As I know he’ll be confronted

By my full frontal beauty

And only years later

Will I realise

That what we all prize is

Authenticity
